Phases of Transition explores how experiential information of a textile can be transferred between digital and tangible mediums. We use a cyclical methodology that combines programmed digital materials and physical fabrication. Base fabric swatches are first digitally captured using the HP Z Captis system, then procedurally manipulated in Adobe Substance through “digital finishing” to amplify textural, structural, optical, and temporal qualities that may otherwise remain overlooked.
These digital transformations subsequently serve as a speculative reference for physical fabrication process on these base fabiecs using manual and automated textile techniques, such as knitting, heat Shibori, devoré, felting, foam printing, and digital embroidery. Together, these transformations examine how experiential information can be abstracted, rescaled, and re-embodied across physical and digital forms. Rather than treating textiles as having fixed or finished states, this methodology frames textile materiality as continuously transforming in processes and times.
